21st June

On this day in 1987, the Benevolent Fund Trophy was raced for at Aycliffe, the only time in the track’s history that it hosted the event.  Nineteen drivers contested the race, which was staged in graded order, and having taken an early lead, 501 Bill Trout proceeded to make the running.  From the rear of the grid, 686 Garry Hooper climbed as high as second, but he could not haul in Bill before the flag fell on the Yorkshireman’s finest hour.
