24th June

On this day in 1996, there was a successful raid of Yorkshire by some Lancashire based drivers.  The season’s World Championship qualifying round at Odsal, Bradford, was a Monday night fixture, which attracted just over 50 drivers.  After winning the consolation, 952 Ernie Howard proceeded to build up a big lead in the final, but that was negated when the race was suspended, after a rollover for 102 Dean Simpson.  Towards the end of the race, Ernie retired, leaving 240 Derek Coleman as the leader for a short time, but he fell back to third, as 790 Mark Taylor swept past to win from 68 Dave Brennan.
