27th July

On this day in 1996, 559 Bert Finnikin made a successful defence of the British Championship at Mildenhall.  The previous year, Bert had won the title at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland, so his success at Mildenhall gave him a notable tarmac and shale double.  A lively race in East Anglia was led for much of the way by popular entertainer 196 Charlie Stubbs, but in the late stages Bert was able to pounce and keep hold of the black and white chequers for another year.  The trophy was presented by Jess Funnell, widow of Fred Funnell, the very first winner of the British Championship in 1964.
